Phuket Bike Week 2011

Phuket Bike Week 2011

The 17th annual Phuket Bike Week will be kicking off on April 8th and run through April 10th this year and as always this will be a spectacular event. Phuket Bike Week is without a doubt one of the most highly publicized bike weeks in all of Asia and it lives up to it’s reputation. Brought to you by the Phuket Riders Club and Ride Thailand Magazine in conjunction with the Tourism Authority of Thailand ( TAT ). This years Phuket Bike Week will surely not disappoint.

2010 saw over 30 thousand visitors come to Phuket Bike Week celebrations and over 2,800 motorcycles representing every brand, make and model as well as the majority of motorcycle clubs from in and around South East Asia. Not only is this a big boost to the Phuket economy it is also a huge stepping stone to Thailand tourism.

While Bike Week is a great thing for the economy and a great time for all involved it is also about Phuket conservation and looking towards the future. To that end each year Phuket Riders Club in conjunction with many other local leaders take time to promote and take part in the conservation of Phuket. 2010 saw Phuket Rider Club along with Club Heron, Patong Municipality and Phuket Bikers together with many motorcycle riders both Thai and foreign planting banana trees along the roadside between Patong and Kamala.

Some of the great things on tap are the Bikers Beach Party on Loma Beach, Custom bike contest, Tattoo contest and, of course, the Miss Phuket Bike Week 2011 Beauty Pageant. There will also be educational and community activities such as the Global Warming tree planting  at Patong Footbal Field and the Charity Ride for Peace around Phuket Island.

Phuket Bike Week will also have some of the best national and international rock and metal bands playing on stage all 3 days at the Music Festival at Loma Park. And whatever you do don’t miss the Biker, Cowboy & Indians reggae Festival happening at Loma Park.

Many international motorcycle companies will also be taking part along side local and regional companies with exhibits and items for sale as well as all kinds of souvenirs and memorabilia to be had.  Not to mention all the great bikes on display, and you can bet there will be all kinds of great food and fun on offer too.

There is a little of something for everyone at Bike week so even if you aren’t a motorcycle enthusiast or Harley owner there will still be great music, parties and tons of great Thai food to be enjoyed.

Talen, I flew out for the Phuket Bike Week last year but it clashed with the massacre during the Red Shirt protests in Bangkok, overshadowing their event.

I was able to get some decent photos of the bikes and the party area but the shock of the deaths changed my mind about posting them on my return. I changed my mind a lot last year.

With an iPhone I was able to get the news as it was happening, reading it out to others. It was a somber time.

And the drive back from Phuket was the longest ever.

It looks to me like the Phuket Bike Week is in megga high gear this year – kudos to them.

Cat, I remember your trip to Bike Week in Phuket. It was a bad time and hopefully not one that is repeated anytime soon. Perhaps you can write about the upcoming bike week and share some of your wonderful photography from last years Bike Week?
